FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

LOCATION

Puerto Peñasco is located in Sonora, Mexico on the Sea of Cortez approximately 60 miles south of the border town of Lukeville, AZ. Travel time is approximately 3.5 hours from both Phoenix or Tucson.

GETTING THERE

An increasing amount of flight options are becoming available, however most prefer to drive and have the conveniences of a car while there. There are now several options connecting Puerto Peñasco to Phoenix, Tucson, San Diego, Tijuana, Nogales, Hermosillo and beyond via safe highways.  We recommend a Google Map to find the best route from your origin.

CROSSING THE BORDER

You’ll enter a border checkpoint going into Mexico operated by the Mexican Federal government. For a list of what you can and cannot bring into Mexico please visit sites such as www.mexonline.com or www.mx.usembassys.gov. A smile and respect go a long way.

AUTO INSURANCE

Mexican auto insurance is required by law when driving in Mexico. Download the Gringo App on either Apple or Google Play.

DRIVING FROM THE BORDER

A good rule of thumb is to drive slower than you think you need to and stop twice as long as stop signs when driving in Mexico.  It’s a different way of thinking, so bring a good playlist and a pocket full of patience and enjoy the slower pace Mexico is known for.  It will save you time and money in the long run.

RENTAL CARS

If traveling by air and renting a car in the United States to drive to Mexico is your chosen method of travel, be sure to call ahead and make sure your rental car agency allows you to do so. The good news is most do allow it provided Mexican auto insurance is purchased through the agency, but not all allow their vehicles into Mexico.

COCKTAILS ANYBODY?

Once you arrive in Puerto Peñasco, or as some refer to as the “drinking village with a fishing problem” please remind yourself drinking and driving don’t mix north or south of the border.  Many shows are within walking distance of Sandy Beach where most of the American owned condominiums are located, but taxis are a plentiful option for those that aren’t. It’s recommended you secure your destination and fare with the driver before getting in the cab.

CURRENCY

US dollars are as common as Mexican Pesos in Puerto Peñasco. You’ll likely save a few pesos here and there using pesos, but it’s not required. Some choose to use credit cards to ensure the best possible exchange rate, others choose not to based on security concerns. ATM’s dispensing US Dollars and Mexican Pesos are becoming more common throughout town, but bringing cash in either form is always recommended.

There are options to fit any size group, budget or luxury.  It’s really up to you. Cellular service has made significant progress in quality over recent years over most services. It’s recommended to contact your carrier prior to leaving the United States to answer any questions.
